“The fire, which called out Franklin firemen early this morning on a trip that cost two lives, destroyed a combination frame stable, garage and hog pen on the property of William T. Cook of Fayetteville, R. R. 1.

Believed to have been struck by a bolt lightning during a severe electrical storm, the building caught fire and was quickly destroyed, causing damage estimated at $600. Cook stated that he carried no insurance on the building..….Mrs. O. C. Hampsher, was attracted by the reflection of the flames and she telephoned an alarm to the Franklin fire house.”

“Two volunteer firemen, Harold E. Snider, 29, West King Street grocer, and David Orr Gabler, 19 son of Mr. and Mrs. Norman J. Gabler of 245 West King Street, lost their lives and eight others were injured, two seriously, shortly after 3 o’clock this morning when the community pumper of the Franklin Fire Company sideswiped a tree on the William T. Cook farm along a byroad, a mile east of Fayetteville.

The firemen were within approximately 60 feet of a fire in the Cook stable when the accident happened. Gabler was killed instantly, and Snider died about 5 o’clock in the Chambersburg Hospital.”

“Fifteen firemen were aboard the truck at the time of the accident. After the collision only Bard Miller Sr. and Ralph Evans remained on the apparatus. The others had either jumped or been jolted off.”

The eight other firefighters hurt in the accident were Bard L. Miller 44, Bard L. Miller Jr. 15, Kenneth Washabaugh 23, Milton K. Burgner no age given, Lewis Worthington no age given, Paul Miller, no age given, Ralph Evans no age given, the eighth firefighter’s was not listed in the article.
