Two Firefighters Injured in Two Alarm Blaze

 

Dec 28th - Two firefighters from the "Big House" received second degree burns while battling this blaze. An ambulance from Co 9 reported a house fire at 978 LWE at 1:09pm. Members from Station 4 advanced a line from Eng. 1-2 and found several rooms off on the first floor. While putting a knock on the fire the attack line burst sending crews scrambling for the door. A second line was pulled and members continued the attack. A second alarm was sounded for manpower. Crews opened up to find fire running the ceiling. After extensive overhaul, Squad 41 cleared at 3:23pm.

E43 Finds MVA w/Confinement

 

Dec 26th - While responding to 3001 Luther Drive for smoke in the building, E43 came upon a MVA with confinement at the number 16 on ramp to I-81. E45 continued to Co 7's box as SQ41 responded to assist E43 on the MVA. Had one auto stuck halfway through the guard rail. Crews removed one door and cleared at 5:42pm. Found food on the stove on the 7 Box. E45 assisted with ventilation and cleared at 5:34pm. The "Big House" responded with 16 firefighters.

 


Busy Night

 

Dec 24th - E45 and E43 were both kept busy overnight with 5 calls to Co. 7's area. SQ41 took the only call in Station 4's first due area.

Kerosene Tanker Overturned

 

Dec 23rd - E45 and SQ41 were dispatched at 0727 hours to 1849 Letterkenny Road for an auto accident reported involving a tanker carrying kerosene. Lt44 arrived to find a tanker truck with it's tank sheared off laying beside the truck leaking kerosene, and a passenger vehicle in a snow bank.  Lt44 took command requesting channel 2, and EMA to the scene to assist with the leaking fuel. E45's crew pulled a 1 1/2" foam bumper line, while SQ41's crew assisted in the leak containment.  A vacuum truck arrived on the scene to assist in containing the leak.  2 class 3 patients were transported to the hospital by ambulances from Co. 8 and Co. 1.  Fire Police from Co. 1 and 18 assisted in shutting down Letterkenny Road for approximately 3 hours. Crews had the scene stabilized and cleared at 1006 hours. The "Big House" operated on the scene with 12 personnel.

 


Propane Truck Fire on the Interstate

 

Dec 21st - Communications received several calls at 6:02am for a propane tractor trailer on fire at mm11 south bound on I-81. The "Big House" responded along with Co 8, SQ15 and Co 1A. ET8 and E45 arrived to find the tires and undercarriage of the tractor on fire. Crews from both units knocked the fire in about 5 minutes. EMA officials were on scene but no leaks or hazards were found. Fire Police 1 was assisted by fire police from several departments with shutting down the interstate at exit 14 and redirecting traffic through Chambersburg. E45 remained on scene until the arrival of Dave's Truck Repair and PennDOT. Station 4 cleared at 7:46am.

 

    


One Over the Bridge

 

Dec 21st - Units responded to Siloam Rd at the bridge at 2:04am for a MVA. E45 arrived to find one SUV in the water. The person on scene that said "I wasn't driving", was not injured. Units cleared at 2:18am.


Squad 41 for the Apartment

 

Dec 17th - Squad 41 responded to 132 S. 6th St. at 4:39pm for the apartment fire. Units arrived to find smoke showing from the first floor apartment. The "Big House" forced the front door and searched ahead of the attack line, removed 2 pets from a basement window. Found a living room off with no extension. Squad 41 cleared at 5:40pm.


2005 Christmas Dinner

 

Dec 16th - The members of the "Big House" enjoyed an evening Friday with friends and family at the first annual Christmas Dinner.  The Chambersburg Elks opened their doors and hospitality to about 40 members. When members weren't eating the prime rib or downing a few cold ones, they were socializing and playing a few games of darts and pool.  A good time was had by all.

 

 


Rescue Runs House Fire

 

Dec 13th - At 1217 hrs, Co 1 and Sq 41 was alerted to 337 E. Queen St. for a dwelling fire.  Sq 41 arrived on scene and the "Big House" members sprinted up the street to find fire in a second floor bedroom.  Sq 41 crew assisted with extinguishing the fire and performed a search to find negative results.  The crew overhauled the bedroom and checked for extension, none found.  Command 1 placed Sq41 in service at 1312 hrs.

 


MVA I81 MM14

 

Dec 12th - At 1433 hours the "Big House" was alerted to MM14 on Interstate 81 for an auto accident involving a dump truck.  Units arrived to find a dump truck on its side in the median, along with an SUV approximately 100 yards north also in the median with little damage.  One patient was transported to the hospital with minor injuries.  Station 4 cleared at 1454 hours.

 


House Fire with Fatalities

Dec 10th - The "Big House" was alerted on the second alarm assignment for the dwelling fire with entrapment at 0451 hrs.  Truck 42 arrived on scene and manpower staged on side A.  Units were operating in defensive mode due to heavy fire volume.  Command 3 released Truck 42 at 0607 hrs.  Units later found a total of 2 adults and 1 child inside the dwelling deceased.

Heavy smoke, but Small Fire

Dec 9th - At 2005 hrs The "Big House" was alerted to 33 Diopside Dr for a basement fire.  Units arrived on scene to find heavy smoke conditions in the basement.  A small smoldering fire was found on the floor.  Fire was quickly extinguished and the smoke was removed.  Units cleared the scene at 2054 hrs. 


Unbelievably, No Tool Time

 

Dec 8th - Prior to the snow arriving, Sta. 4 and Co 8 units were dispatched to Interstate 81 MM12 southbound at 1857 hrs for an MVA involving a tractor and trailer and a passenger car.  Co 8 units arrived on scene and advised negative entrapment.  Vehicle was only occupied by the driver which received moderate injuries.  The "Big House" arrived to find moderate damage done to the tractor and trailer.  Crews contained fluid spills and disconnected batteries.  Units cleared at 1950 hrs.

 


Are You Kidding Me?

 

Dec 6th - Employees were trying to remove a shredder from the now famous CWP site when it caught fire again. E45 responded at 9:59am and found the same machine as yesterday on fire. Crews quickly extinguished the fire with class B foam.

 

    


Its Still Burning!!!

 

Dec 5th - Chambersburg Waste Paper was one of 7 runs on Monday. After receiving a call from the Nextel boys at 1:34pm, DC47 investigated a large column of black smoke in the area of Route 11 and Kriner Rd. Once in the area it was found to be a piece of machinery on fire at CWP. Workers were trying to cut up the equipment when it caught the grease pit on fire. E45 used class B foam to extinguish the stubborn fire.

Rescue Goes Everywhere

 

Dec 4th - Co 9 was dispatched for a chimney fire at 4444 Parnell Dr. Units arrived to find extension fire running between a block interior wall and the stone exterior. Command 9 requested the box upgraded at 3:27pm. SQ41 responded with 8 firefighters. The "Big House" removed the hot water heater and a block wall. Crews used a line from E18-1 to extinguish the fire then continued overhauling. Units cleared at 4:41pm.


Where There's Smoke There's Fire

 

Dec 4th - The "Big House" was awakened at 0345 hours for reported smoke inside a dwelling at 1998 Wren Ct.  E45 arrived on the scene with smoke showing.  Crews investigated and found an auto in the garage on fire.  Crews then advanced a 1.5" line to the garage and put a knock on the fire. While crews performed a secondary search of the home a cat was rescued.  Station 4 units cleared at 0506 hours.

 


Wider Rt. 30 Brings More MVA's

 

Dec 1st - SQ41 and E45 responded to Route 30 at the number 16 on ramp for a MVA. The 6:28pm accident sent 2 patients to the hospital with minor injuries. This was the second accident of the day on the new 5 lane section of LWE. The first one occurred at 2:20pm in the 1300 block and sent one patient to the hospital.
