Construction Dumpster Off

 

October 31st - E45 and E43 responded to the intersection of Lindia and Hamilton for a dumpster fire. LT 44 arrived to find a construction dumpster off. Units cleared at 2052 hours.


Auto Fire, MVA

 

October 30th - At 1231 hours E45, and E43 responded to 1024 Warmspring Rd Box 44-05 for an auto fire next to a house.  E45 arrived on scene with one auto on fire in the roadway.  Crews pulled the front bumper line and put a quick knock on the fire. The fire was contained to the engine compartment. Crews cleared the auto fire at 1248 hours.  While returning back to the station E45, and E43 responded at 1257 hours to the 1900 block of LWW for a motorcycle accident.  E45 arrived to find one motorcycle off the roadway with no injuries.  E45 returned available at 1309 hours.

Firefighter Succumbs to Burns

 

October 25th - Altoona Fire Capt. Robert Gallardy passed away this morning from burns suffered during a training fire. Area firefighters may remember Capt. Gallardy from a Fire Officer I course that he assisted with at Station 4. Our thoughts and prayers go out to the Gallardy Family.

 


Firefighter Rescues Firefighter

 

October 23rd - While attending an instructors training course at Lewistown, Sgt Chad Kelly assisted with the rescue of a brother firefighter. Sgt Kelly was acting as the lead instructor of a crew attacking a basement fire when members found an instructor down. Chad assisted with removing the firefighter to safety. The severity of burns is unknown but the firefighter was air lifted to a burn center.

 


MVA with Confinement

 

October 23rd - The "Big House" was alerted to Garman Drive for an MVA with confinement at 1442 hrs.  Sq 41 arrived on scene and stabilized the vehicle.  The squad crew removed the roof to gain access to the pt.  The pt was extricated in 11 minutes and turned over to EMS.  The "Big House" cleared at 1517 hrs.

 


One Overturned

 

October 22nd - SQ41 and E43 responded at 1125 hours to Lincoln Way West and Tapeworm Rd for the MVA. Units found one on its side with minor injuries.


Daytime Mobile Home Fire

 

October 18th - Units were alerted at 1105 hours for a mobile home fire at 1660 White Pine Drive, Box 18-4. DC47 arrived on scene and confirmed a working fire. E18-2 arrived with E43 close behind. Crews from both units advanced a line in side A and made quick work of the fire. Had a living room off with extension into the plenum. After an extended overhaul, the "Big House" cleared at 1311 hours.

 

 

 


Live-in Headed For The Air Force

 

October 17th - FF Doug Trahey leaves today at 4pm for the USAF. Doug will have to tackle boot camp prior to going to the DOD fire academy. He has been a live-in at the "Big House" since May and will be missed!


Auto Accident With a Rollover

 

October 16th - At 1249 hours SQ41 and E43 responded to 1782 Gabler Rd for an auto accident reported vehicle overturned.  SQ41 arrived to find one car overturned with all occupants out of the vehicle.


Auto Accident With Confinement

 

October 15th - SQ41and E43 responded to I81 MM17 at 2156 hours for an auto accident. SQ41 arrived on the scene to find one car under the guard rail with the driver confined inside.  Crews stabilized the vehicle.  While setting up to extricate the patient, the ambulance crew assisted the driver with self extrication through the passenger side window. Station 4 remained on the scene for lighting and went available at 2214 hours.

 


Apartment Building Fire With Entrapment

 

October 11th - SQ41 responded into the Borough of Chambersburg at 0234 hours for the apartment fire. As the Squad arrived at 49 LWW, HQ advised possible entrapment. Members started searching the large oddly configured building that is connected to several other addresses and has numerous apartments. An elderly man made his way out side A as crews advanced a line into the courtyard. The "Big House" made an excellent knock down with a line from E1-4. A second alarm brought the "Twins" to the scene. E43 and E45 both put supply lines in the street. E45 supplied T-1. Crews remained on scene for 2 hours for extensive overhaul. Station 4 units cleared at 0435 hours.


MVA w/Entrapment

 

October 7th - A 6:48am fatal accident occurred on the exit 14 north bound on ramp. Crews found a truck hauling half gallon containers of soy milk had traveled off the interstate across both the exit and on ramps then up an embankment. The trailer compressed the tractor and sleeper upon impact with the embankment. Members found the occupant on the floor pinned under the passenger's seat. SQ41 and E43 along with Co 8, extricated one person from a tractor trailer in 22 minutes. Command 8 released units at 7:45am.

 

 

 

 

 


Anybody Home?

 

October 4th - At 2115 hours the "Big House" was alerted on the 44-03 box to 2854 Rocky Springs Rd for an auto accident, reported one auto into a mobile home.  C46 arrived on the scene and confirmed the dispatch. SQ41 arrived to find one vehicle in the yard with extensive damage to the corner of the house. Crews stabilized the vehicle, assisted with patient packaging, and assessed the damage to the home.  After covering the damaged area, crews cleared at 2157 hrs. (Check out the piece of wood that penetrated the passenger compartment in the picture below.)

 


Two Alarm House Fire

 

October 3rd - Box 44-09 sounded at 1323 hours for the house fire. The dispatch was to 4 houses up from 815 Highland Drive. E43 arrived at 145 Highland Drive with smoke showing and advanced a line in side A. DC47 arrived with fire showing from the roof and requested a second alarm. Crews had heavy fire in the kitchen and attic. E43's crew assisted an elderly resident to the outside. The resident stated he tried for 15 minutes to put the fire out then called 911. The "Big House" made an excellent knock down in 11 minutes but extensive overhaul was needed. Apparatus from companies 1,17,8,9,7,15,3,52,53,FP1, and Air 10 assisted on the blaze.

 


Happy Anniversary

 

October 2nd - The "Big House" celebrated the one month anniversary of the eternal flame by returning for a large pile of debris burning at 1801 hours. The clean up is finally started but crews are still responding for flare ups.

  

 House Fire

October 2nd - E43 was transferred to Co 18 at 1054 hours when they were alerted to 9831 Corner Rd, Box 9-03. Co 9 was on scene of a fully involved garage with extension into the house. E43 assisted with overhaul and supplied E18-1 with water. Units cleared at 1305 hours.


Auto Accident with Vehicle Overturned

 

October 1st - At 0711 hours SQ41 was alerted to 1360 Stanley Ave Ext. for an auto accident with a vehicle overturned.  Crews arrived to find a passenger car overturned in a yard.  The driver had self extricated himself. Units cleared at 0727 hours
