Just Another Day At The "Big House"

Feb 23rd - Two fires, an inside gas leak, a MVA, an AFA, and two transfers with every unit in the firehouse dispatched on a run, all in 82 minutes reminded everyone why they call it the "Big House". The afternoon started with members paying their respect to Richard Wegley, a life member who passed away earlier this week. As soon as the dress uniforms were off it was time to go to work. T42, E43 and E45 responded to 6081 Rockhill Rd for the Silo fire at 2:03pm. T42 set up ladder pipe operations flowing roughly 15,000 gal. While enroute, E45 and UT 44 diverted to 610 Menno Village for the AFA at 2:11pm. After clearing the AFA, E45 transferred to Co 17 at 2:38pm.  At 2:52pm E43, E45(from 17's house) and UT44 responded to 23 Kriner Rd for an inside gas leak. Crews found a gas line broken off by a forklift. While crews were controlling the leak, a MVA occurred in front of the address. SQ41 was dispatched at 3:03pm for this MVA but with 4 rigs already on the street, the Squad didn't make it out. E45 returned to Co 17 after clearing the gas leak. The calls kept coming at 3:25pm as E43 and B44 were sent to 7036 Gehr Rd. Units had a large field fire that extended into a shed. E43 stretched a line to the structure and put a quick knock on the fire while B44 controlled the perimeter. Members finally got a break before getting one more run at 9:31pm for an AFA at 5222 Fort McCord Rd. Fifteen dedicated volunteers handled the runs like true professionals.

Building Fire

Feb 15th - E43, T42 and E45 responded with 18 firefighters to the reported structure fire at 4:20pm. Units arrived at 9035 Fort McCord Rd to find heavy fire showing. E43's crew advanced a line from ET18 into side A. The truck assisted with controlling the fire in the collapsed addition. E45 set up water supply operations. After several minutes of interior attack and the bulk of the fire knocked down, Command 18 was forced to order an evacuation due to a weakened roof assembly. The "Big House" operated for several hours with an extensive overhaul before clearing at 7:33pm.

Close Call

Feb 14th - Units were alerted at 7:29pm for the barn fire at 3751 Rocky Spring Road. E43 and T42 arrived to find fire inside the barn approximately 2 feet from several large round bails of hay. The "Big House" put a quick knock on the fire stopping what could have been an all nighter. After a little overhaul, 18 members cleared the scene at 8:20pm.

Vehicle Fire Next To A Mobile Home

Feb 13th - Members were given a wakeup call at 5:28am for the vehicle on fire next to a mobile home at 640 Mickey Inn Rd Lot 67.  E43 arrived on scene and found a well involved vehicle approximately 10 - 20 feet from the mobile home. E43 used the front bumper line and extinguished the fire.  Units went available at 6:11am

Underage Driver

Feb 11th - A juvenile was behind the wheel a couple of years too early when his vehicle was struck by a pick up truck at the entrance to the West Side Plaza. The 3:34 accident occurred as the youth was trying to assist an under-the-weather family member home. SQ41 and E43 assisted with loading one patient and vehicle hazards.

MVA

Feb 10th - SQ41 responded at 1846 hours to the intersection of Lincoln Way East and Interstate 81 for an auto accident.  SQ41 arrived on the scene with two vehicles partially blocking the exit 16 on ramp.  SQ41's crew secured  both vehicles and assisted with patient care. The ambulance transported one patient to the hospital.

Three Box Alarms in 59 Minutes

Feb 7th - The "Big House" was the place to be this morning as members responded to 5 calls before noon, including 3 box alarms. The first box was to 2463 Loop Rd for fire in the Vo-Tech School. E43 arrived first at 9:09am. Found fire in a sawdust collector with extension into a classroom. E45 reverse laid to a hydrant and SQ41 sent manpower to the scene. The second box was dispatched at 9:55am as units were picking up from the first one. T42, SQ41 and E45 responded to 1406 Edenville Rd. Units found fire in the chimney with no extension. As crews tried to enter the residence, the homeowner became irritated that the fire dept was called. After State Police had a little chat with the individual, members were able to mitigate the situation. A third box sounded at 10:02am sending E43 to 772 St. Thomas Williamson Rd. Again, crews found fire in the chimney. E43 took roof operations. Sixteen members emptied the station for 3 hours.

Other runs for the day included an auto fire on I-81 at 7:17am, an AFA to 149 Walnut Bottom Rd at 11:36am and 800 block of Boyer Mill Rd for a vehicle fire as a result of a non-injury auto accident.

Backing Camera Installed

Feb 4th -  A rear vision backing camera was installed on Squad 41 Saturday. This camera is equipped with a 7" color flat screen and external mic. The camera is currently on all the time. Later, it will be hooked up to turn on when the vehicle is in reverse. Drivers still need to use spotters when backing in tight areas. Special thanks to everyone who helped with the installation.

Truck Runs to the Valley

Feb 2nd -  Shortly after SQ41 returned from an auto fire in Marion, Truck 42 responded on the special alarm to assist on the house fire at 3:15am. Co. 21 was on the scene of your average $1.2 million single family home in Path Valley. First alarm units found the structure well involved. Truck 42 set up ladder pipe operations on side A. Five members from the Truck operated on scene until 6:17am.
