Our Half Million Dollar Man
May 30th
-
The Franklin Fire Company
received word today that its application for a forestry grant was
approved. The Franklins were awarded the maximum allotment of
$7,500. This money will be used for payment of the new Special Unit
44.
In 2001 Ken North wrote
his first grant for the Franklin Fire Company. That grant was
awarded in 2002 for just over $200,000. Those funds were spent for
public education and safety. Over the next few years Kenny wrote and
received several smaller grants for the Franklins ranging from
$5,000 to $20,000. Already this year we have been awarded two grants
thanks to Kenny's hard work. The first one was for $200,000 worth of
communications equipment and the second is listed above. The total
amount of grant money received since 2002 is close to half a million
dollars thanks mostly to Mr. North. Keep up the good work Kenny!!!

Back To Back Working Fires

Two small fires an hour apart
kept units busy overnight. The first fire sent SQ41 and E43 to
1099 Wayne Ave at 2:09am. Co 1 and Station 4 units arrived to find
smoke showing from the Arby's restaurant. Crews forced entry and
find fire in the ceiling above the dining area. The fire was quickly
controlled and with some minor overhaul units were in service by
3:34am.
E43 cleared Arby's just
in time to respond on the 7-5 box for the house at 3:08am. The fire
located at 5310 Treher Rd also brought T42 to the scene. First
arriving units held the fire to the room of origin. Members checked
for extension, vented and assisted with overhaul. Station 4 cleared

Apartment Building Fire
May 17th
-
Members were attending a
funeral for a life member of Co 7 when the first due box sounded for
an apartment fire at 1000 Laurich Drive. Communications reported an
auto fire with extension into the building. At 12:30pm, units
arrived on side A of a two story middle of the row with smoke
showing. E45 stretched a line to side C and found three stories with
heavy fire showing from the basement level and a pick up fully
involved in the driveway. The truck was carrying a 50 gallon fuel
tank in the bed and made it difficult to extinguish. As E45 was
putting a knock on the basement, T42 advanced a line into side A and
held it on the first floor. Next in units from Co 8 and 17 assisted
with the first and second floors while E43 sent its crew to side C
with E45. Crews from Co 9, 3 and 18 arrived to check the exposures.
After a lengthy overhaul by all companies, the fire was found to be
contained to the original apartment. Station 4 units cleared at
3:34pm.

Road
Work on LWE
May 8th
-
GUILFORD TOWNSHIP --
Motorists might encounter traffic restricted to a single-lane during
the day in one or both directions on U.S. 30 east of Chambersburg --
starting today.
The single-lane
traffic restrictions between Quarry Street and Spring Valley Road in
Guilford Township are necessary so that construction crews can
remove the top layer of asphalt on the road. This milling operation
is scheduled to continue for the rest of the week.
After the road is cleaned and prepped next week, a new layer of
asphalt will be paved -- probably two weeks from now.
This work is being conducted because the blacktop used last year to
complete the U.S. 30 widening project failed to meet PennDOT
specifications when tested last fall. Consequently, the contractor
for the project is required to remove and replace the failed asphalt
material. All work and traffic restrictions should be completed
after about four weeks.
The $27 million widening project started in March 2004 and wrapped
up last fall. The project opened U.S. 30 to two lanes in both
directions in a 31/2-mile stretch in Guilford Township where traffic
was becoming more congested.
Motorists are asked to be alert to this operation, to slow down
through the work zone area, and to pay attention to work zone
signing. Motorists may want to allow additional time in their travel
plans because of delays.

Five Runs For The Squad
May 1st
-
Squad 41 kept members busy with 2
MVA's, 2 box alarms, and of course 1 AFA then throw in another MVA
for E45. The runs started at 10:35am with a MVA at LWE and Mont Alto
Rd. E45 went to Garman Dr and LWE at 2:58pm for a MVA. Back to the
Squad at 3:32pm for its second MVA at 127 Kauffman Rd. Next a house
fire for Squad 41 at 4:17pm(see story below). At the request of
AC1-5, the Squad responded for manpower to 67 Garber St for smoke in
the dwelling at 5pm. And you can't end a day without an AFA so E45,
T42 and SQ41 responded to 1464 Northfield Dr at 5:13pm and found
food on the stove.
Units were alerted for
the house fire at 518 Elder St. SQ41 arrived with nothing showing.
As members hit the front porch, the homeowner pointed up the street
to a house with fire on the exterior of the home. SQ41's crew
corrected the address to 651 Reservoir St and sprinted to the new
location. Crews found a contractor's torch burning in the yard and
the D side of the home burnt. Firefighters turned off the torch but
it continued to vent and burn. After some minor overhaul, the fire
was contained to the exterior of the home and Command 1 released all
units at 4:42pm.
