MVA w/Entrapment

 

September 29th - SQ41 and E45 responded to this MVA across from 535 Bengate Rd around 9:16am. Units arrived to find one auto over the embankment with two occupants still inside. Command requested a second BLS and ALS. Crews were able to gain access to the driver but the passenger had to be extricated. As members carried tools down the embankment, a bees nest was disturbed and they began sting the rescuers. A CO2 extinguisher was discharged in attempt to knock down the swarm but helped only for a second. Crews were able to complete the extrication quickly removing the victim and themselves from the area. Units were in service at 9:53am

Mobile Home Fire

 

September 29th - Truck 42 responded on the 7-5 box for a mobile home fire at 3am. Co 7 units arrived at 5300 LWE with a working fire. Truck 42 set up ventilation, lighting and assisted with opening up inside. Crews held it to the kitchen and hallway. Units operated for just over an hour before going in service.

Landing Zone

 

September 28th - Engine 45 was dispatched to LWE and Ragged Edge Road to setup a landing zone. Co 7 was on the scene with an MVA. One patient was flown by StatMed.

Apartment Building Fire

 

September 27th - Lightning struck the roof of an apartment building at 7:05pm. E43, E45 and SQ41(T42 OOS) arrived at 2872 LWW to find smoke showing from a single story duplex. As members advanced a line inside the fire broke through the roof. With no attic access and ceiling made of plywood covered by drywall, crews were forced to hit the fire from side A. A ladder was thrown and the line was advanced to the attic through a hole breached in the gable end. The fire was contained within 12 minutes. Units from 1, 8, 17 and 18 assisted with overhaul while numerous other companies staged on LWE. Station 4 cleared at 9:12pm.

 

A second box alarm in Station 4's area was handled by the transfer companies just 30 minutes after the above fire. Co 15 found another lightning strike on a home at 2130 Constitution Drive. Lightning struck the house, followed some wiring into the bathroom, blew apart a light in the ceiling and caught the insulation on fire. Units held the fire to a small area and returned to service.


MVA

 

September 24th - The newly paved section of LWW got its first accident at 12:49pm. SQ41 found two autos in a side impact collision. Members found 4 people injured and Command requested additional BLS units. Crews assisted with packaging patients, vehicle hazards and traffic control before going in service at 1:22pm.


1st Annual Gun Bash

 

September 22nd - Station 4 and Co 12 held their 1st ever joint Gun Bash on Saturday. Members from both departments planned the event over a year ago and it proved to be a big success. Crews worked extremely hard on Saturday but in the end everyone had fun and both organizations made some money. Thanks to all those that supported us!!!

 

Volunteers from Co 15 and Saxton along with Truck 1 covered the station all day and managed to catch 4 runs including a small fire in the boro. Many thanks to all of you!!!

 

Once members returned to quarters, SQ41 and E43 responded to I-81 north bound at exit 14 for the tractor trailer rolled over. Units found one on its side with no hazards and no injuries.

 

  


Rush Hour Fly Out

 

September 21st - SQ41 and E43 responded to a MVA at the intersection of MPHS and Kriner Rd. Units arrived to find a motorcycle into the side of passenger car with the rider laying 50' away. Members assisted EMS with the patient and started controlling a gas leak. Air medical was started to the scene and E17-2 responded to set up the landing zone. EMS changed the LZ to Chambersburg Hospital and 17 was placed in service. Route 11 was shut down for about an hour.

  

 

Lunch Time Rollover

 

September 21st - Station 4 responded to this MVA on I-81 at exit 14. SQ41 and E43 arrived at 1:00pm to find one auto on its roof. The driver was self extricated and turned over to EMS.

 

Morning Entrapment

 

September 21st - Co. 18 units were alerted around 5:30am for an auto accident in the 1500 block of St. Thomas Edenville Rd. Capt. 18 arrived on the scene with one overturned with heavy entrapment and requested SQ41 to the scene. SQ41 arrived on the scene and assisted Co. 18 with patient extrication and leaking fluids. SQ41 returned to service at 6:38 hours.
 


New Easy Access Compartment

 

September 20th - While responding to a barn fire in Mercersburg, T42 had a compartment door come open. The door struck 2 parked cars and caused minor damage to the Truck. The doors were removed and the equipment moved around. T42 is back in service.


Simultaneous Building Fires

 

September 19th - Two building fires in the same area of the county brought units from Franklin, Cumberland, Fulton, Adams and Washington Counties to 4987 Guitner Rd in Hamilton Township and 11,000 block of Shimpstown Rd in Mercersburg. The Guitner Rd fire came out at 3:07pm. The caller reported a small shed on fire. E43 arrived with a 100' x 50' structure well off with exposures that included a house, mobile home, barn and a bus. E43 advanced a line into the building but the crew was removed due to an unstable structure. Co 8 and other arriving units pulled 2 additional lines from E43 to protect exposures. E45 laid a 5" line from T17 to the roadway and supplied the ladder pipe. SQ41 responded for manpower and assisted crews with removing the tin roof and walls to gain better access for the ladder pipe. Multiple tankers were called in to maintain the water supply. Just as the fire was marked under control, a second fire was put out in the 11,000 block of Shimpstown Rd in Mercersburg. Command 8 released half the assignment on Guitner Rd to respond on the second box. Units arrived on Shimpstown Rd with a working Barn fire. T42 was alerted on that box but  manpower was committed on Guitner Rd. E7-2 was transferred to Station 4 and responded to Mercersburg with 3 of our members. E43, E45 and SQ41 went in service at 8:13pm.

 

Transfer Companies to Station 4 were E7-2, Cumberland County Penn Township Engine 50, Cumberland County Newville Rescue 47 and Adams County York Springs Tanker 9.

Box and MVA w/Entrapment

 

September 15th - SQ41 responded on the Box Alarm to 228 N. Hackberry Dr for smoke in the apartment at 6:43pm. Co 1 arrived with smoke showing and a report of entrapment. Members found a stove fire with no extension and a search turned up negative. As soon as crews exited the apartment, Station 4 was alerted for the MVA w/entrapment. SQ41 cleared the box and responded with E43 to the intersection of LWE and Franklin Farm Ln. Units arrived at 6:57pm to find two autos blocking the west bound lane. Had one on its side with the driver still inside. Members quickly cribbed the vehicle with struts then flapped the roof. The driver was removed in 15 minutes. EMS units transport a total of two patients. LWE west bound was shut down for over an hour causing a major traffic back up. Units cleared around 8pm. Later E43 and SQ41 responded to 2242 LWE to assist Co 7 with an auto fire next to the house. Co 7 put a knock on it and Sta4 units cleared the run at 9:31pm.

 

  

  


MVA

 

September 13th - One person was injured in this 2 vehicle accident at MPHS and Kriner Rd. SQ41 and E43 arrived 3:33pm to find a passenger car and pick up truck involved. Members took care of the vehicle hazards and controlled traffic at this busy intersection.

  


Fatal MVA

 

September 11th - Station 4 units were dispatched for a MVA with entrapment at 3:12pm. SQ41 and E43 arrived on Leafmore Rd on the west side of the bridge making it an 18-4 box. Co 18 units also responded. The accident involved a passenger car and a full size van. One person was pronounced dead on the scene. SQ41 remained on scene and extricated the victim after the investigation. SQ41 and Co 18 cleared the scene at 4:45pm.


Welcome Home

 

September 10th - Chambersburg Reserve MP Troop 324 returned home to a heroes welcome by Station 4, Co 1, Co 14, CPD and numerous citizens. Their unit had been deployed to IRAQ for over a year fighting for our country. There were signs and decorations all around town for the troops to see as the buses made their way home. The last leg of their journey is pictured here.


Another MVA on Lincoln Way

 

September 9th - SQ41 and E43 responded to 1506 LWE at 7:42am. Units found an SUV head on into a utility pole. EMS handled pt care were members taped off the area and controlled vehicle hazards.


MVA Sends Two By Air

 

September 8th - An accident at the intersection of Falling Spring Rd and LWE just before 11am ejected 2 people off a motorcycle and into the bed of a pick up truck. The accident involved 2 SUV's, a pick up and a motorcycle. One SUV ended up on top of the bike. Three members from Station 4 arrived on scene in their POV, established Command 44 and secured the vehicles then assisted EMS with packaging 2 class 1 pts. Command 44 landed 2 helicoptors in a parking lot across the street and a third pt was transported by ambulance. Units cleared at 12:04pm.

More Runs and More Money

 

September 7th - The day started off busy not only with 3 fire calls in 90 minutes but also with phone calls congratulating us on another FEMA Grant. FF North, our official grant writer, woke to find this message in his email.

 

"Congratulations! Your grant application submitted under the Emergency Preparedness and Response Directorate's FY 07 Assistance to Firefighters Grant Program has been approved for award."

 

This $52,000 grant and will be used for equipment on our apparatus.

 

The morning runs included 2 box alarms and an AFA The first box came out at 8:15am for smoke in the house at 6 Moyle Dr. T42 and E43 responded and assisted Co 7 with investigating. Crews found a bad AC motor and returned to service. The second box at 9:29am for the apartment building sent T42 and SQ41 to 730 Basset Dr. Units found mulch next to the building and held it with the first due engine. E43 responded around 9:45am for a water flow alarm at 5155 Innovation Way.

 

Afternoon brings auto fire and AFA. Station 4 responded to 618 Heintzelman Ave for the auto fire at 2:42pm. E43 found a passenger car with fire in the engine compartment. Fire was contained to the engine and units were in service at 3:15pm. E43 and T42 finished the day with an AFA to 4495 Edenville Rd at 8pm.


What's in the Basement?

 

September 3rd - Squad 41 responded to 6529 Ebenezer Rd for the house fire at 3:52pm. Co 11 found fire showing from side A and put a quick knock on it. Members found a swimming pool in the basement. SQ41 operated as RIT before being placed in service.

Busy Night, Early Morning

 

September 1st - Members were awakened at 10:04am to assist company 9 with a building fire. Shortly after responding Command 9 placed Station 4 in service. At 11:24am crews were dispatched to 730 Menno-Village for an AFA. E43 discovered food on the stove. Crews assisted resident with ventilation and were available at 11:36am

 

August 31st - Engine 43 was alerted at 11:34pm for a transfer to fill Company 13. At 11:52pm Squad 41 was alerted for manpower to assist at the building fire at 7490 Old Scotland Road. Shortly after responding for the building fire Station 4 was alerted for an AFA at 1495 LWE. The Squad crew operated at the scene of the fire  until 02:26am.
