April 2008

House Fire

April 29th - Communications alerted units to 5341 Race Track Rd for the reported chimney fire at 2am. Co 18 arrived to find smoke showing from side A of a two story dwelling. A 360 revealed 3 stories in the rear with fire showing from the third floor. Command 18 upgraded the box to the house fire assignment. E43 laid a 5" line to the scene, extended the original attack line and advanced a second line to the top floor. Crews from E18-1 and E43 put a quick knock on it but extensive overhaul was needed. Additional companies including T42 worked to open up the structure and extinguish fire in the walls and void spaces. Station 4 returned to service at 4:37am.

16 Runs in 24 Hours

April 25th and 26th - Station 4 and several other departments were sent in every direction as nearly 3 inches of rain pounded the Chambersburg area Saturday night. Nineteen members manned the rigs while a few others were stuck behind working bingo.

Box Alarm

April 26th - Units on the 7-1 Box fought an extremely dense fog enroute to 1578 Walker Rd at 2:36am. Command 7 reported a small trailer on fire in the garage. E43 pulled a line into the garage. The trailer was removed, extinguished and no extension was found. E43 and E45 cleared the call at 3:07am.

Confinement

April 23rd - Co 1 and SQ41 found a minivan on its side in the intersection of Scotland and Ramsey around 3:30pm. One person was confined and members went to work removing the dual sunroofs and support bar. The patient was extricated in a few minutes and turned over to EMS.

Three MVA's On I-81

April 20th - Heavy rain caused 3 MVA's between exits 14 and 16. The first one was reported at 10:15am. Co 8 and Station 4 found one auto spun out of control into the median and left the scene. The second and third accidents  happened around 4:30pm again bringing Station 4 and Co 8 units. SQ41 found 2 autos over the embankment in the south bound lane at mm15. A total of 5 patients were transported. As E43 entered the Interstate, they found a two vehicle accident at mm16. Interstate 81 was backed up for miles as crews worked both accidents.

Fatal Mountain Fire

April 18th - A minor MVA around 10am in the intersection of Bell Ave and Sollenberger Rd brought E43 out on the first run of the day. The next incident wasn't so minor. Station 4 was alerted at 2:06pm for an outside investigation in the area of Mountain Rd. SU44 and E43 arrived at 5609 Mountain Rd to find 2 acres of the mountain involved and moving quickly. As members started stretching a line and controlling the perimeter they discovered a dead body. Command requested PSP and Franklin County Coroner. The area was secured and crews continued with the fire fight. A total of 10-15 acres of rough wood land burned. It took 8 Brush units, 4 Engines, 2 Tankers, manpower from 9 departments and 5 plus hours to extinguish the fire. While on this incident, SQ41 and the transfer company, E1-52, handled a MVA in the intersection of Willow St and McKinley St. Units arrived around 6pm to find 3 autos with one injury.

Three Fires on the 13th

April 13th - Members responded to 5 runs including 3 working fires. A 3:30am medical local and a 1:16pm Truck run were just the start of a busy day. E43 and E45 responded for the shed fire at 2:46pm. Some confusion on the location had the call as a 7-2 box but on arrival units found it to be a 44-02 box. Had the roof and framing of a covered bar-b-que pit on fire. E43 put a line on it and units were in service within 45 minutes. The second fire was slightly larger as units found a 50' x 400' building well off at 579 Alleman Rd. Co 17 reported heavy fire showing enroute and Command 8 requested second and third alarm tankers. T42 arrived at 10:10pm and set up on the A/D corner. E43 and E45 dropped members at the scene and assisted with water supply. Crews stretched dual attack lines and saved about half of the structure. Additional personnel assisted with removing the tin roofing material that had collapsed into the burned away section of the building. While E43, E45 and T42 were assisting with overhaul of this incident, a third fire was put out. This one was across the street from Station 4's firehouse. SQ41 and the transfer company(E11-2) found smoke showing from a 2 story duplex. Had a room off on the second floor. Crews held it to a single room and were back in service at the same time as T42 was clearing the Alleman Rd fire, 1:10am.

Box Alarm  and MVA w/Rollover

April 12th - Co 1 and SQ41 were alerted at 4:30am for smoke in the building at 1070 Stouffer Ave. Units arrived on scene of a single story nursing home with normal conditions. Members found an electrical outlet burned up. Crews shut power off to the room and opened up the wall to check for extension. Units returned to service around 5am. A MVA in the 1200 block of Edenville Rd left one person injured. SQ41 and E43 found a passenger car on its roof. The occupant was self extricated and units returned to service in about 20 minutes. A gas leak at 219 Macintosh Way sent SQ41 to assist Co 1 just before 9pm. A minor leak was found and quickly controlled.

MVA's

April 9th, 10th, 11th - Station 4 units responded to 3 MVA's the pictured below. On the 9th at 7:19am, SQ41 and E43 found a passenger car vs a pick up truck at Mower and Walker Roads with one minor injury. SQ41 arrived at 1040 LWW around 2pm on the 10th to find an SUV vs a Van. The 11th sent SQ41 to 6195 MPHS at 6:10pm. Co 8 had one auto into a tree with a class one patient.

Fire Showing

April 7th - E43, T42 and E45 found fire showing from the chimney of 484 Warmspring Rd at 5:45pm. Units found a large amount of creosote and heat built up in the flue. Members contained the fire to the chimney. Station 4 units cleared just in time for drill night. Members participated in a live burn at the FCFCA Training Center. Special thanks to ET8 and Air 53 for assisting.

Chimney Fire and MVA

April 6th - Station 4 responded for the reported structure fire in the 500 block of Spring Valley Rd. Co 7 found the call to be good intent. E43 and T42 returned to service at 3:41pm. E43 and T42 were back on the street at 5:45pm for the chimney fire. Units arrived at 45 Sunset Ave with a small fire in the flue. Command 44 held it to Station 4. SQ41 and E43 were alerted to a MVA in the area of 58 Cornertown Rd at 8pm. Members found one vehicle off the road into a tree with one injury.

Entrapment w/Flyout

April 5th - Command 18 requested SQ41 to assist on an auto accident in the 3900 block of LWW at 8:48pm. Co 18 units found 1 vehicle on its side, 1 person pinned in the car by the steering column and their arm trapped under the vehicle. Crews removed the roof with the Amkus system and lifted the car with air bags. E43 responded and set up the landing zone. Station 4 units cleared at 9:48pm.

Truck and House Fire

April 2nd - E43 and E45 had a truck fire at 8:17am. Units arrived in front of 3115 Keefer Rd with fire in the engine and passenger compartments. A quick knock down with the bumper line and some overhaul had members back in service before 9am. A 911 call just before 7:30pm reported a house fire at 235 S 4th St. Members from Co 1 and SQ41 found a room off on the second floor and short work of it. Crews contained the fire to a bedroom and returned to service an hour later.
