95 Runs For October

Oct 31th -
The 5th run of the day was this box alarm. E45, E43 and T42 responded into Co 18's area for multiple callers reporting a house fire at 4452 Shatzer St. Units arrived at 4:15pm to find mulch burning next to the home and handled it within a few minutes.

Fill The Box

Oct 30th -
T42 responded along with Co 8 and 18 for a chimney fire at 2841 Warmspring Rd. At 11:00am, Command 8 reported fire in the walls. Communications filled out the box, which sent E45, Co 17 and SQ3 to the scene. Crews worked to remove brick and block to get to a deep seated fire. Members were able to stop the fire from spreading but the home suffered extensive structural damage. After about 15 minutes in the station, members were hitting the street again as SQ41 responded to Walker Rd for a MVA. SQ41 assisted Co 1 on the minor accident.

CO Incident

Oct 29th -
Another 5 run day ended with an inside investigation at 29 N. Federal St. SQ41 and Co 1 arrived at 7:40pm to find the resident reporting a furnace malfunction. Members entered the home with a meter finding 300ppm CO and 13% O2 in the basement. Crews set up ventilation and remained on scene until readings returned to normal.

Hazmat Fire

Oct 28th -
The first box alarm of the day was dispatched at 6:05am for fire in the building at 1080 Opportunity Ave. Co 13 arrived on scene of the 11-13 box with a liquid hazardous material fire. T42 laddered the roof and cut a 6' x 6' hole above the fire. E45 assisted T42 with setting up PPV and cut out a large section of the wall for ventilation. Units were placed in service by Command 11 at 7:17am. The day ended with 3 box alarms and 2 local alarms.

Smoke Detector Program

Saturday, October 25th, 2008 was a rainy day but the Franklin Fire Company, 158 West King Street, Chambersburg, Pa. and the Lowe’s Home Improvement Store at 1600 LWE, Chambersburg, PA partnered to kick-off OPERATION LIFESAVER. Fourteen members of the Fire Department and 5 employees of Lowe’s braved the rainy weather and went to area residences to install free Smoke Detectors. Click here for full story.

Late Night Mess

Oct 25th -
SQ41 was alerted at 2:42am for manpower to assist Co 11 and 13 with a construction dumpster on fire. Members from all three companies worked to extinguish the fire. After the standard AFA at Scotland School, SQ41 responded with Co 1 for the MVA at 1:28pm. Units arrived in front of 51 S. Franklin St to find a passenger car into the rear of an SUV. The driver struck a van, hit the SUV and pushed it into a third vehicle before coming to a stop. Crews assisted EMS with removing the patient.

Woods Fire

Oct 24th -
Station 4 responded to four runs including this woods fire at 1992 Black Gap Rd. E45 assisted units from Co 7 with about half an acre.

37 Minute Response To Tractor Trailer Crash With Second Fly Out For The Day

Oct 23rd -
SQ41 was alerted to PA Turnpike mile marker 211 East Bound at 4:24pm to assist on a MVA. Units arrived to a tractor trailer hauling boxes of dirt rear ended another tractor trailer full of syrup. One driver was pinned heavily in the wreckage. Crews from Co. 51, 47, 15 and Sta4 used tools from every rig on the scene to extricate the driver. After roughly an hour the driver was flown out from the scene. SQ41 returned to service at 7:18pm.
Motorcycle Accident With Fly Out

Oct 23rd -
Members had 4 straight days of 5 or more runs before responding to this motorcycle accident on WCN Drive at 1:37am. SQ41 and E45 found the a motorcycle struck a guardrail but the rider was not around. A quick search found the rider in a ditch about 100 feet from the bike. Command 44 requested air medical to the hospital as crews packaged the patient. Units returned to service at 2:05am.

More For The 19th

Oct 19th-
After the box alarm in the morning, members got 3 more runs in the afternoon. E45 responded to 2 AFA's, one at 3:05pm and one at 4:12pm. On the second AFA, E45 arrived to find heavy smoke inside a first floor apartment located at 411 Park Circle. Crews found food on the stove with no extension. While venting the building, Station 4 was alerted for a MVA in front of 693 Falling Spring Rd. E45 cleared the smoke and responded along with SQ41 on the MVA at 4:21pm. Units arrived to find one auto blocking the roadway with one patient.
Its That Time Of Year

Oct 19th-
Cold weather hit the area and it wasn't long before members got the first fire of the season. Communications struck the 44-09 box at 7:26am for the house fire. E45, T42 and E43 arrived at 2698 Keefer Rd with fire in the walls of a single family home. The resident reported fire in the chimney had extended into the house. Crews opened up walls and ceiling containing the fire to a small area. Units from Co 17, 18, 8, 14 and 7 also responded on the box. Command 44 released all units just before 9am.

Too Much Fire Prevention??

Oct 17th  and 18th-
After a record setting 112 hour drought in calls, members finally managed 9 runs on Friday and Saturday including 4 MVA's, 3 AFA's, 1 Transfer and 1 Box Alarm.

Where'd He Go??

Oct 11th -
Auto accidents continue to keep Members busy. Crews finished cleaning up from the fire shown below then were alerted to I-81 for a MVA with possible ejection. SQ41 and E45 arrived at 3:30am near mile marker 17 with a passenger car into the side of a tractor trailer. An occupant of the car stated he wasn't driving, his buddy was. PSP and Sta4 personnel searched the area but were unable to locate any sign of a second person. After E45 and T42 handled an AFA at 8am, SQ41 and E45 responded to the intersection of Kohler Rd and Walker Rd for another MVA. Crews found two passenger cars and two injuries.

Midnight To Midnight

Oct 10th -
Members responded to 3 Box Alarms, 2 AFA's and 2 more accidents on Lincoln Way. E45 and T42 responded to 3583 Scotland Rd around midnight for the first AFA. The first box alarm was to 1481 Springview Circle, Co 17's box. Units arrived at 12:45am to find fire in the wall of a single family home. Crews operated for an hour and contained the fire to a small section of the home. E45 responded to 1950 LWE for the first MVA at 1pm and SQ41 to 816 LWW at 1:45pm for the second MVA. An individual working on a motorcycle sparked a flash fire outside of 5341 Cumberland Highway causing minor damage to the home. E45 and T42 cleared this box alarm just before 6pm then cleared the second AFA at 8pm.  SQ41 and E45 were alerted at 10:24pm for the third box alarm in the area of 1000 McDowell Rd, Co 9's box, for several storage units on fire. First arriving companies found 3 units well off with extension into the adjoining units. SQ41 opened up on side C then assisted Co 18, 9 and 56 with overhaul on side A. Command 9 placed SQ41 in service around midnight.

More Vehicle Accidents

Oct 9th -
Drivers traveling Route 30 around Chambersburg  were greeted with a road closer on LWW and a 3 car accident on LWE.  Station 4 responded to 897 LWW at 3:06pm for a MVA. Units arrived to find an SUV drove thru a pole, over an embankment into a parking lot and struck a parked car. With a pole down and live power lines arching on the roadway, Command 44 shut down all 3 lanes of LWW during rush hour. Traffic was backed up for miles in both directions as the road remained closed for several hours. EMS transported one patient. A second accident sent SQ41 and E45 from LWW to LWE. Units arrived in the 1200 block of LWE at 3:49pm to find a three car accident with minor injuries. E45 and E43 also responded into Co.8's first due for a box alarm at 5:15pm and an AFA around 11am.

Fatal MVA, Auto w/Three Confined, Auto Fire

Oct 7th -
SQ41 operated on three incidents within an hour and a half. Co13 was alerted for a MVA with entrapment and ejection in the area of their firehouse. Members realized that the address was a Station 4 box and SQ41 responded to the scene. Units arrived in the 5000 block of Letterkenny Rd at 4:30pm to find a passenger car hit a dump truck head on killing the driver instantly. SQ41 and Co 13 shut down the roadway and awaited PSP to complete their investigation. Crews remained on scene to extricate the victim before returning to service at 5:50pm. As soon as SQ41 backed into the station it was out the door for an auto reported rolled over into a house with confinement. Co 1 and SQ41 arrived in front of 148 E. Mckinley St at 6:02pm confirming dispatch. SQ41 cribbed the SUV, took out a rear window and removed 2 adults and a small child. SQ41 was released by Command 1 for an auto fire at 1005 Wayne Ave. Members left the stabilization equipment on scene and responded to the auto fire at 6:11pm. SQ41 arrived in the K-mart parking lot with fire in the engine compartment. Crews used a line from E1-2 to extinguish the fire. With both Co 1 engines tied up on calls, E45 was alerted for an AFA at 6:17pm.

Truck Ops Drill
10-6-08

Run Away Truck Pins Chaser

Oct 4th -
SQ41 and Co 1 units arrived in the rear of 462 S. Second St around 9am to find a pick up truck into a fence. It was reported that the victim's truck jumped into gear and as he chased it down it slammed him in the door trapping him in the vehicle with his legs stuck outside the door between the chain link fence. SQ41 used the hydraulic cutters to quickly remove a section of the fence freeing the patient.

Outside Fire Extends Into House

Oct 3rd -
E45, E43 and T42 responded to 121 School House Rd at 9am for the house fire. Co 18 was dispatched for an outside investigation, arrived to find a plastic dome type shed fire extending into a house and filled the box. Members assisted with opening up and hitting hot spots.

Third Entrapment In 7 Mile Radius

Oct 2nd -
Franklin County Communications started a deadly day at 6:02am with SU44 responding to Middle Drive for a cardiac arrest. Just a few hours later, Co 18 handled a fatal MVA with entrapment in the 9500 block of LWW. E45 transferred to Co 18 from 9am to 12:30pm. Co 18 would get more tool time in the afternoon in the 300 block of Hade Rd for another MVA with entrapment. See Co 18's site for pictures. The third MVA with entrapment was dispatched at 10:27pm. SQ8 and E45 found a sports car wrapped around a telephone pole next to 2027 Warmspring Rd. The driver was pinned and crews worked together to remove the passenger's side door and lift the dash. E43 set up the LZ for Stat 12. Command 8 released Station 4 at 11:23pm.

 One Into The Guardrail

Oct 1st -
Co 1 and SQ41 responded for the MVA involving a motorcycle at the intersection of Wayne Ave and Orchard Dr. Upon arrived members found the rider under the front of a pick up truck. Crews assisted EMS with victim removal then went in service at 12:15pm. SQ41 and E45 responded on I-81 at the 19 mile marker at 3:30pm. Units found a passenger car did a 360 and hit the guardrail. EMS had 1 patient.
