One Last Fire for January

Jan 31st -
T42 and Sq41 responded when Co. 9 was dispatched at 2248hrs for the dwelling fire. Units arrived to find a detached garage on fire. T42 set up PPV, ventilated the roof, and assisting with overhaul. Command 9 released Station 4 units at 2359hrs.
 
Engine Company on the House Fire

Jan 30th-
Members responded to 4 runs including this house fire. E45 and E43 were alerted at 5:33pm to assist on the 15-1 box. Co 15 arrived in front of 12744 Mongul Hill Rd with fire showing from a single family home. Sta4 assisted with opening up on the second floor and extinguishing fire in the walls, ceiling and attic. Command 15 released crews at 8:41pm.

Fatal Fire At Fort Loudon Inn

Jan 27st -
At 7:09am, SQ41 and T42 responded on the 9-18A box for the hotel fire with entrapment. Co 9 arrived in front of the 3 story Fort Loudon Inn built in 1790 with heavy fire showing from the second and third floors. SQ41 arrived and assisted crews with an aggressive interior attack as Command began receiving reports of up to 5 children trapped. Crews from numerous departments entered the structure from every opening in heavy fire conditions searching for victims. Several roof and wall collapses occurred and forced Command to evacuate the building. T42 set up ladder pipe operations on the C/D corner and flowed off and on throughout the incident. Members reentered the structure to open up and extinguish fires that the ladder pipes could not reach. Firefighters received mixed reports about the location and number of victims missing. In the end, one small child was found in a collapsed area on the first floor. A few firefighters were injured including one firefighter from Sta4 who was transported to the hospital with a knee injury. SQ41 and T42 cleared the scene at 2:17pm and responded to another box alarm at 3:11pm.

Jan 21st -
SQ41 responded for 2 MVA's including the one picture here in front of 248 W King St.
Double Fatal MVA With Entrapment and Dwelling Fire

Jan 20th-
Crews were alerted for an early morning MVA on I-81 at 6:44am. SQ41 and E45 responded to mm19 for a report of tractor trailer jack knifed. While enroute Communications reported possible entrapment. Sta4 units encounted a large traffic back log. Co 7 units reported 1 heavily trapped and 2 fatalities. Crews cut the A and B posts then flapped the roof to free the victim. As members checked the area they found a total of 4 tractor trailers, 2 cars and bus with 40 passengers on board. Units stoodby while PSP completed investigating the accident then extricated the 2 fatals. Sta4 was available for 5 minutes before T42 responded on the WFD at 9:23am. Co 5 units arrived at 7023 Slabtown Rd to find fire showing from a mobile home. T42 assisted with opening up to expose fire in the walls. E45 and T42 responded to another water leak at 1:33pm at 1500 Northfield Drive. E45, T42 and E43 were alerted to 1465 Warmspring Rd for a box alarm at 7:24pm. Units arrived to find fire in an exterior light fixture and held it to Sta4.

Back To Cumberland Circle

Jan 19th-
E45 and T42 responded to another mobile fire on Cumberland Circle at 9:44am. Co 18 arrived at 7607 Cumberland Circle with light smoke in the home. Co 18 and Sta4 investigated to find a smoldering fire under the mobile home along the frame rail. At 12:57pm, SQ41 went to I-81 in the area of mm21 for the MVA. Command 15 held it with Co 15. A second box alarm at 7:44pm sent E45 and T42 back to Cumberland Circle. This time it was 7709. Units found light smoke and reduced the assignment to Co 18. As Sta4 cleared that box, Communications put out a 7-4 box for a propane leak in the home. E43, E45 and T42 responded along with Co 7 and 17 to 2268 Springfield Dr. Command 7 had E43 assist with investigating and T42 vented the home. E45 assisted Co 7 again at 11:23pm with a water leak at 1435 Doron Drive. Crews found large sprinkler pipe broke and flooded the first and second floors. E45 assisted occupants out of the hotel before going in service.
Water Leaks

Jan 18th-
Members spent the day forcing doors and shutting down sprinkler systems. The first leak was at 11:15am. SQ41 and T42 arrived at 875 LWW to find a sprinkler head pouring water into a grocery store. Crews forced the door to the sprinkler room and shut down the system. An AFA at 12:46pm sent T42 to 1931 Ashley Dr. Units arrived to find water flowing from a vacant apartment. T42 forced the apartment door and sprinkler room door to control the leak. A second AFA at 1320 LWE around 2pm revealed yet another water leak. E45 and T42 forced entry into a vacant store in a strip mall and secured the sprinkler system. SQ41 and T42 responded to a box alarm with Co 1 units at 8:57pm. Units found it to be good intent and returned to service.

Five Fires and Fourteen Runs in 40 Hours

Jan 16th and 17th-
As temperatures continued to be in the teens, members were kept busy with 5 fires.  The 16th started at 0656 hrs for the house fire at 57 Glen St in Chambersburg.  T42 and Sq41 assisted Co 1 units with searching, venting, and overhauling the structure.  During the incident, SU44 assisted with 2 medical calls in the boro with 1 being a cardiac arrest.  Units cleared the fire at 0834 hrs.  Sq41 and E45 were then headed out the door again for another fire.  This time is was back with Co 9 at 1344 hrs to 221 Skyhigh Rd  for a chimney fire with extension.  Sq41 crew threw ladders and went to the roof and opened up around the chimney while E45 crew assisted with interior operations and overhaul.  Units cleared at 1505 hrs.  The Squad responded to an MVA with Co17 at 1801 hrs.  The members were back out again at 0517 hrs (1/17/09) to Adams County for another chimney fire with extension.  Sq41 arrived and set up lighting while the crew opened up the exterior wall around the chimney and T42 staged their manpower.  With 2 units in another county, E45 handled an inside investigation of C.O. at 328 East Catherine St in the boro then transferred to Co 7.  Units cleared the fire at 0655 hrs. E45 responded with Co 7 to 4290 Black Gap Rd for the auto on its side at 0946 hrs. E45 assisted with loading patients and controlling fluids. At 1304 hrs, T42 was out with Co 1 units for the AFA to 1015 Philadelphia Ave. SQ41 and T42 were back in the boro again at 1533 hrs for a reported house fire at 1024 S. Fourth St. Co 1 found 1 burn victim and quick reduced the assignment. E43 left the station to standby for Co 3 at 1700 and returned at midnight after missing 2 more fires. The first of those two fires was at 1854 hrs as E45 and T42 responded to 7669 Cumberland Circle for the mobile home fire with entrapment. Co 18 found a working fire but no entrapment. E45 assisted with extinguishing the blaze while T42 set up lighting, ventilation and opened up. Units cleared that box at 2052 hrs. Members cleaned up just in time to do it all over again at 2213 hrs as E45 and T42 worked a first due job at 105 Franklin Farm Lane. Units arrived to find fire showing from the D side of a two story home. E45 stretched 2 lines in and put a quick knock on it. T42 laddered, vented, set up lighting and overhauled the first floor. Crews from 7, 8 and 17 searched and opened up. The box was cleared at 2340 hrs ending an extremely busy week.

Seven Runs and Two More Fires

Jan 14th -
After cleaning up from the building fire late on the 13th, members were awakened at 7:17am for a house fire. E45, T42 and E43 arrived at 4135 Edenville Rd to find smoke coming from the roof. E45 knocked down fire in the kitchen ceiling and attic while T42 opened the roof and hooked the ceiling. Crews from 8,17 and 18 assisted with overhaul before Command 44 placed the box in service at 10:08am. SQ41 responded to assist the Coroner with removing a body at 10:29am. SQ41 and E45 were alerted along with Co 8 for the auto accident at exit 14 of I-81around 12:45pm. Units found one vehicle rolled over with 2 patients. Just as SQ41 and E45 clearing another auto accident in front of 2194 LWW, SQ41 was alerted for smoke in the house at 451 Lantern Ln. Crews found a malfunction in the chimney and were back in service at 5:33pm. It wasn't long before members were headed back out the door. At 6:09pm, SQ41 responded into Co 9's first due for the building fire. Units arrived at 16948 Buchanan Trail West to find heavy fire showing from TV channel 68's building. Crews battled temps in the teens for the third time in 24 hours while stretching handlines and more 5" hose. All eyes were on the 100' TV tower as flames threatened to bring it down. SQ41 operated a line on side B until 8:55pm and E45 transferred to Co 9 until 9:11pm.

Layin' It Out

Jan 13th -
E45, T42 and E43 responded on the 18-4 box for a garage fire at 7pm. Co 18 arrived at 167 Coble Rd with fire showing from a 40' by 60' building. E45 laid out all 1600' of 5" and took a second line in. T42 laddered the building and worked with 17's crew to open up the exterior walls. E43 set up for water supply. After the fire was knocked down interior crews reported trusses failing at the gusset plates and members were forced out of the building. After overhauling the structure, units went in service at 10:18pm.

House Fire

Jan 12th -
Crews responded to 3 box alarms including one working fire. Before the Boxes could start, E45 responded to 335 Falling Spring Rd at 3:51am for an AFA. E45 and T42 responded on the first box at 10:51am for a house fire. Co 8 arrived at 1594 Gomer Rd with smoke showing. E45 backed up E8-2 as crews found fire in the living room. T42 opened the roof and assisted with overhaul. Sta4 went in service at 11:58am. An odor of smoke at 262 E. Catherine St sent SQ41 into Co 1's first due at 6:46pm. Command 1 reported nothing found and placed units in service at 7:01pm. E45, T42 and E43 were alerted for the thrid box at 10:12pm. Units responded to a reported chimney fire at 1168 Warmspring Rd. Fire was contained to the flue and the box was in service at 11:09pm.

Members from Station 4 took time out on Saturday to celebrate the accomplishments of 2008. Thanks to Co 3, 15 and 53 for the transfers.

Garage Fire

Jan 8th -
Co 1 and SQ41 were alerted at 1:24am for a garage fire in the rear of 773 Broad St. Units arrived to find a 25' by 25' garage with fire showing. SQ41 assisted with the attack lines and opening up. Crews had the fire knocked quickly and were back in service at 2:33am.

Seven on the Seventh

Jan 7th -
Members had another multiple run day on the seventh starting at 6:13am with SQ41 responding on a box alarm to 829 Mckinley St. A second box alarm at 11:50am sent E43 and T42 to 122 Spring Valley Rd. Co 7 units were on scene with fire in the chimney. T42 took roof operations and E43 picked up the hydrant then transferred to Co 7. E43 handled wires down calls at 1:45pm, 4:26pm and 7:02pm. SQ41, E43 and E45 responded to I-81 at 4:46pm for the MVA. Units arrived at mm18 to find one auto off the road in a ditch. 

Make It Eight

Jan 5th -
Co 13 responded for the AFA and arrived to find machinery on fire next to the building. At 8:22pm, E43, T42 and E45 filled out the box along with Co 11, SQ15 and T1. E43 checked the interior, T42 checked the roof and E45 picked up 13's line. Members cut out a section of duct work and confirmed the fire was contained to the outside machinery.

After the two morning runs, members responded to 5 more in the afternoon and evening. Those runs were:

First Pin of the Year

Jan 5th -
E43 and T42 returned from the usual AFA at 3583 Scotland Rd around 7:30am then SQ41 responded at 8:57am for the MVA with rollover and entrapment. Co 1 and SQ41 arrived to an SUV on its roof in the front yard of the Hospital in the 700 block of LWE. Members cribbed the vehicle and removed the driver's door. Crews worked with EMS to free the patient before returning to service at 9:29am.

Brush Fire

Jan 3rd -
E43 and T42 were returning from a chimney fire at 8875 Edenville Rd when Communications dispatched a brush fire on Loop Rd. E43 and SU44 responded at 1:41pm. Units arrived to the rear of 2244 Loop Rd to find roughly an acre off with an exposure and spreading fast. Command 44 requested E45, ET14 and Brush 8. Due to swampy conditions crews extended hand lines up to 450' to get ahead of the fire. The fire was brought under control and units were in service 3pm.
