Fire in the Hole

March 31st -
Sq 41 and E45 responded to 194 Mt. Union Road for smoke from the roof at 4:17pm. First arriving units reported a possible attic fire. SQ41 Team A searched the first floor and found fire extending up from the basement to the first floor and attic thru a large hole in the floor. Team B entered the basement with a line and put a knock on it while engine companies extinguished fire upstairs. Crews from 7, 5, 17, 8 and Sta4 worked together to overhaul the house before returning to service at 6:21pm.

Tires on Fire

March 28th -
SU44 responded to assist Co15 with a field fire involving approximately 25 - 30 tires at 681 Wagner Rd at 1802hrs. Crews used 1inch1/2 pre connect to put a knock on the fire. Crew used Pro Pak and several gallons of foam to extinguish the tires. SU44 returned to service at 1934hrs.
3 Runs for Squad 41

March 27th -
Sq 41 responded to assist Co.1 to area of Starbucks for an MVA with head injury. Crew assisted EMS with patient packaging and controlled vehicle hazards. Shortly after returning to station Sq 41 was back out the door for a pedestrian accident at the 400 block of Hollywell Avenue. Sq 41 was placed in service by Engine 1-4. While backing into the station again Sq 41 was dispatched to assist on the Dwelling Fire at 11025 Roxbury Road. Crews operated on scene assisting with salvage & overhaul, and roof operations. Squad 41 then returned to service at 1807hrs.
Burning Bush

March 26th -
 SQ41 responded to 990 LWE when E1-2 filled for the building fire at 8:05pm. E1-2 had responded for outside investigation and arrived to find fire in the rear of a flower shop.
2nd Fire of the Day

March 25th -
 Station 4 was alerted at 11:31am for the dwelling fire in the Boro at 447 Hood St, 3 blocks from the fire house. Squad 41 arrived first on the scene to find fire showing on side bravo. Squad 41 searched the residence and discovered the fire was contained to the outside of the structure. Units cleared the scene at 12:15pm.
Trailer Fire

March 25th -
 Make it four days in a row, members were out the door by 8am. Members were awaken at 05:15 for a mattress fire in a mobile home at 640 Mickey Inn . E45, T42, E43 arrived on scene to find fire showing from side Charlie. E45 pulled a line and put a quick knock on the fire. T42 vented the trailer and searched. Units cleared the scene at 07:38.

Auto vs Army Truck Ends With Entrapment and Flyout

March 24th -
For the third day in a row, members were out the door by 8am. This time it was SQ41, E45 and SU44 responding at 7:57am for a MVA reported to be an auto vs an Army truck. Units arrived to find the front of the auto under a "deuce and a half" with one person trapped. SQ41 and E45 removed the roof and one door then extricated the patient out the rear of the vehicle. SU44 set up a landing zone for air medical in a nearby baseball field.
5 Runs and 3 Buildings

March 23rd -
The day started with E45 and T42 responding to 3583 Scotland Rd for the AFA at 7:04am. At 11:53am, SU44, E45 and SQ41 handled a vehicle fire in front of 2391 Letterkenny Rd. Crews found fire in the engine compartment. With E45 tranferred to Co 18, E43 and T42 responded into Co17's first due for a garage fire at 1:57pm. Chief 17 reported multiple structures involved. E43 picked up 17's line and set up water supply. Members from 17, 8, Sta4, 3, 7 and 14 worked to extinguish a 20' x 40' garage, a 12' x 24' garage and a 10' x 12' shed. E43 and T42 returned to service at 4:17pm. The day ended the same as it started as E45 and T42 handled another AFA at 3583 Scotland Rd at 11:28pm.
Brush Fires

March 21st -
SU44 responded to assist Co17 with a brush fire at 2792 Wayne Rd around noon. Units brought the fire under control quickly and were back in service just after 1pm. While returning from a vehicle fire in the 1900 block of Warmspring Rd at 7:30pm, SQ41 arrived on scene of this van into a utility pole in the 700 block of Warmspring Rd. Crews turned patients over to EMS and went in service. SU44 assisted Co 7 on a brush fire in the area of 1359 Anthony Highway at 8:27pm. SU44 mopped up hot spots and supplied Brush 5 before going in service at 9:35pm.
Back to Back Fires

March 19th -
Members woke this morning at 4:54am as Communications stuck the 17 box for the house fire. E45, E43 and SQ41 responded to 777 Kriner Rd and assisted E17-2 with a fire on the first floor. E45 backed up 17's crew and assisted with opening up. The fire was contained to the first floor. Communications dispatched a second box alarm at 6:05am. Station 4's transfer engine(E18-2) and E45 responded on the box. E13-2 arrived at 1050 Superior Ave to find fire in an insulation manufacturing facility. E45 relieved 13's crew. The fire was contained to a small area.
Deck Fire

March 18th -
E45, T42 and E43 responded for the apartment building fire at 7:37pm. Station 4 arrived to find a small fire contained to the second floor deck. Crews opened up and wet down the area before Command 44 released all units at 8:12pm.

Can It Get Any Worse?

March 18th -
Just when you thought traffic couldn't get any worse someone decided to dig up Main St. Starting today N. Main St. will be periodically down to one lane from King St. to the Square.

Vehicle Hits High Pressure Gas Line

March 14th -
Station 4 was alerted at 0424hrs for the MVA with rollover on I-81 at MM19. Sq 41 arrived and assisted Co. 7 with fluid control. Station 4 returned to service shortly after. At 1913 hrs, members were dispatched to assist Co. 1 with an auto that had struck a gas main. The vehicle was wedged on top of a 200 psi gas line. Crews stabilized the auto and used the "O" Cutters to free the auto once the gas main was secured by the Gas Dept.  Command 1 placed Sq 41 in service at 1942hrs.

Fire in the building at CWP

March 13th -
 At 1319hrs, members were alerted for the reported fire in the building at Chambersburg Waste Paper. Station 4 arrived to find heavy smoke showing from an overhead door on Side C. E45's crew pulled an attack line and found a paper bailer on fire inside the building. Crews put a quick knock on the fire and contained it to the bailer itself. Trucks 42 and 17 set up PPV and had roof operations. Command 44 then placed the box in service at 1416hrs.


Morning Traffic Accidents

March 12th -
 SQ41 responded along with Co 1 units to 143 Industrial Drive for the school bus crash. Crews arrived at 7:48am to find a small bus head on into a telephone pole with wires across the roadway. The children were staged in SQ41 until EMS arrived for transport. A second crash at 8:13am sent SQ41 to the 1400 block of LWE where two cars were involved in a head on collision. Occupants escaped with only minor injuries. The day ended with E45 responding on a box alarm in Co 18's first due. Units found fire in the chimney and were in service at 8:37pm.
Two Almost Fires

March 11th -
T42 was alerted at 5:00am for the house fire in Co 18 first due. Units arrived at 5342 Warmspring Rd to find heavy black smoke coming from side C. Crews found a small fire in the basement. T42 assisted in the basement and set up ventilation. E45 covered 18's house. SQ41 responded next at 8:45am for the building fire at 1011 Rocky Mountain Rd South. First arriving units found another small fire in the walls around a heating unit. After clearing a transfer to Co 13, E45 responded with SU44 to 2406 MPHS for the brush fire. Members arrived at 7:09pm and made short work of the field fire.

House Fire in the Valley

March 10th -
Members responded to 4 runs on the 9th and continued shortly after midnight on the 10th. E45, E43 and T42 responded to 1007 Park Circle West at 2:30am for "the apartment". A Sta4 member living nearby rushed into the two story building and removed 2 baskets of burning clothes before the room caught fire. Crews arrived and confirmed fire out. Command 44 held Sta4 for overhaul and ventilation. At 11:36am, SQ41 was alerted to Buchanan Valley for the house fire. First arriving units found a well involved structure. SQ41 was initially assigned RIT but would end up taking a line into the basement to assist with opening up and extinguishment. Command 27 released SQ41 at 3:07pm.
Brush Fires

March 7th -
Sta4 responded to 3 brush fires, 1 shed fire, 1 vehicle fire and a transfer in 3 1/2 hours. SQ41 was first out the door at 12:32pm for the vehicle fire on I-81 and was available in time for the a brush fire at 1283 Crottlestown Rd. SU44, E45 and SQ41 arrived at 12:47pm to find a tree line on fire. Members were returning from Crottlestown Rd and spotted a second brush fire to the rear of 302 Sollenberger Rd. E45, E43 and SU44 extinguished the fire and were back in service at 2:01pm. Just 30 minutes later, E45, E43 and T42 were alerted on the 7-4 box for a garage fire. Co 7 found a small shed and contained it quickly. E45 filled in at Co 7 until 3:08pm. Another brush fire at 3:50pm sent units to 166 Mower Rd. SU44 handled it and placed E45 in service.

House Off

March 4th -
SQ41 responded along with Co 1 and T17 for the house fire at 5:47pm. Units arrived to find smoke pushing from the roof of 116 Kennedy St. SQ41 reported a room off on the third floor with extension to the attic and put a line on it. Members opened up the ceiling and contained the fire with two lines.
44 Years 48 Days

March 3rd -
Members of the Franklin Fire Company celebrated the retirement of Chambersburg Firefighter Richard Trace on Tuesday night. His career started on December 14, 1964 and his last day was February 1, 2009. He spent 26 years at the Franklin Street Station as the Wagon Driver of E1-4. During his 44 years and 48 days, he has responded to countless emergencies, numerous fires and delivered several babies. Rich and his brother Larry, who retired in 2005 after 38 years and 10 days, will receive a well deserved gold Retired Firefighter badge.
